The name of the game these days is destruction. Gone are the
carefree afternoons with a docile and mild mannered daughter in
my charge. Now she is a full scale obliterator. We visited a
friends house the other day and she didn't waste any time
emptying out her kitchen cabinets and pulling all her childrens'
artwork off their refrigerator. While I was busy cleaning up
their kitchen she moved on to the dog's food and water and then
to the bathroom. It was a relief, actually, that my friend
witnessed this behavior and commented on her uncanny ability to
leave a path of destruction in no time flat. To look at Isabelle
you'd never imagine she's quite as hard core as she is. I
started to wonder if it was just my perception, that I am
getting older and slower and she is just wearing me out. But my
girlfriend confirmed that no, it's not me, it's Miss Isabelle. I
know this phase will pass and I'll probably remember it fondly.
But for now I try to remind myself daily that she is
experiencing the real world for the first time. And she is doing
it with gusto.
Her newest fascination is with
anything she can sit on. She loves to turn around and back into
me, wanting to sit on my lap. She still loves to try to climb
the stairs, but now she loves to sit on the bottom step. We have
cleaned up and brought inside her tricycle and her Little Tykes
car to add to her collection of things she can sit on. What once
started as a basketful of toys in the den has now taken over
half the room. She still doesn't seem too interested in the TV
her brothers love, but she has developed a fondess for Sponge
Bob. He actually makes her laugh out loud. Actually her favorite
character seems to be Sponge Bob's dim-witted sidekick, Patrick.
If I set her on her trike in front of Sponge Bob with a sippy
cup or a bowl of Teddy Grahams she might 'chill' long enough for
me to get the house picked up...quickly. She also enjoys board
books and playing the piano. Isabelle and Tori spend at least a
few minutes everyday making 'music' together.
She has added
some new words to her ever growing vocabulary: hot, all done and
thank you. She loves to extract water from the water cooler and
I have explained over and over that the water is hot. She also,
while I am drying my hair, tries to touch the hairdryer. Again,
I explain to her, no don't touch, it's hot. So now, when she's
doing something she knows is a no-no, I sometimes hear her say
"hot". It's actually quite endearing and it's hard to get upset
with her when she's just so darn adorable. She says "all done"
for things she wants finished...now. I say it nightly when I
give her a bath and have to rinse her hair. She dislikes having
the water poured over her head so I use as little shampoo as
possible so I have to rinse as little as possible. When I'm
finished I say "All done" and she repeats it. Now, when I wipe
her nose or change a dirty diaper she says "all done", hoping
that will signal the end for her. Still no "mama" yet, but she
does the sign for me whenever I ask her to say it. Pretty cute.
Halloween was
quite an adventure. It was raining, hard, and Chris wasn't able
to be there to help herd the children with me. We all went to a
friend's house and ate pizza before trick or treating. Isabelle
was in a bad mood, but her spirits lifted after we started trick
or treating. She was the most captivating fairy princess in the
neighborhood. She took easily to the wand part of her costume,
but wasn't as enamored with her tiara. We did manage to get a
few pictures of her with it on before she ditched it. As much
craziness as she adds to our household, none of us could stand
one day without her. The boys continue to swoon over her, each
attempting to glean a kiss before the others. They spend many
evenings pushing her around in her car to her little heart's
content. Tori, known to have a composed and passive personality,
wears her heart on her sleeve where Isabelle is concerned. Tori
waited an awfully long time to have a sister and I think she
would agree that Isabelle was most assuredly worth the wait.
We have a
cardiology appointment on November 14. The plan is to do an
echocardiogram and we are praying that the news is good! |
