CLUBB FAMILY UPDATE
Here we are again at our monthly update time! Ainsley has now
been home with us for four whole months. Hearing it in that
respect (four months) sounds like such little time, but our life
with her (and with Griffin) feels as if we've always known
them…yet in other ways it feels like just yesterday David was
boarding the flight to China to bring our daughter home while
Shannon stayed home to care for a 3 week old baby! It is amazing
how much can change in these little lives in such a short time.
This past month (July 14-August 14) has been full of adventure
as we continued to be out and about with the kids as much as
possible, enjoying the summer weather and taking advantage of
local events and activities. Our major adventure was our first
trip outside of the USA with Ainsley and Griffin (more details
below). We are becoming more and more at ease incorporating the
kids into our active lifestyles. And Griffin and Ainsley
actually seem to love being on the go and exploring new places
and new schedules rather than having the same routine all the
time. With that said, however, there certainly are times when
this is not the case and we do have “meltdowns.” But those are
few and far between, so we feel very lucky that both kids seem
to be very flexible and adaptable as they fit into our often
times less than routine lifestyle.
Ainsley (16 months old) continues to surprise us with how
well she is adjusting to life in the US and in the Clubb family
(both of which are quite a culture shock we are sure!). She
loves her little brother, Griffin, and has transitioned from a
love/hate relationship with our dog, Bosco, into one that is
mostly love. She continues to surprise us with how many
different and unique foods she will eat, but she also does have
a few moments from time to time when she seems to shut down and
get a little more picky. She loves the swimming pool and being
outside in the sun. She is talking more and more (and actually
becoming understandable - not just babble). Some of her new
words are:
▪
baby;
▪
bye bye (and waves);
▪
thank you;
▪
cheers (and clinks glasses);
▪
yeah;
▪
c'mon (and pats her leg like when we
are
▪
calling our dog, Bosco); and
▪
Bosco (which sounds more like “Buh”).
Even more interesting is how she comprehends certain things. She
definitely understands us when we speak to her. Any time we say
Griffin needs a diaper change, she runs to the place we keep the
diapers and gets all the essentials for a diaper change out of
the cabinet! She is becoming quite the mother's helper. Besides
“helping” with the diaper changes, she constantly gives Griffin
his toys, puts things back when we ask her to, helps open the
door when we need to take Bosco outside…and the list goes on and
on.
Griffin (5 months old) is becoming such a little boy in
every way. He is looking more and more like a toddler (though he
is not there yet, of course) and less and less like a tiny baby.
He is so cute! He is quite aware of his surroundings - smiling
and laughing all the time. He rolls over from his back to his
belly regularly now and is scooting around all over the floor
exploring new toys. We now almost always find him on his belly
when he wakes up in his crib. He LOVES watching Bosco. He will
just sit and smile at Bosco and lean over trying to touch him.
It is so cute. He is also still very entertained by his big
sister and enjoys watching her run around and play. While we
love each new stage of his development, it is hard to know we
will never see him as that tiny little newborn baby anymore. He
is becoming a little kid! We're probably going to start him on
solid foods (in addition to continuing to nurse) in
mid-September, which is exciting but also kind of sad to Shannon
who has been his only source of nourishment since birth.
Turks & Caicos…We Survived & Thrived (and actually had
fun!)
Our trip to Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort & Spa was
wonderful! While it was certainly different traveling with
a 4-month old and 15-month old, it was not a bad
experience at all. Since we have traveled extensively
already, we kind of have our standard operating procedures
in place in terms of packing, getting to the airport,
going with the flow in foreign countries, etc., so we just
tried to integrate the kids into that as well. This seemed
to work just fine. There were some challenging moments
(primarily on the trip back), but nothing major at all. Of
course, we were lucky to be upgraded to first class, so
that helped a lot in terms of extra space, more attention
from the flight crew, etc.
The time in Turks & Caicos was a great time especially for
David to spend some concentrated time with Griffin and
Ainsley. He has really missed seeing them as much since he
has been back to work.
Our days mostly followed a similar pattern where we got
up, played with the kids a little bit for some morning
fun, got dressed (daily outfit = bathing suit!), put on
the sunscreen, and headed out the door for breakfast.
(Getting ready to head out the door took a little longer
than usual since we had to deal with putting lotion on
everyone, dealing with diapers and swimmy diapers, etc.)
Ainsley loved the breakfast buffets, where she enjoyed
everything, including fresh fruit, yogurt, chocolate chip
pancakes, waffles, eggs. After breakfast, we then got some
seats either at the beach or at one of the pools and
basically camped out there all day until sunset or close
to sunset every night, taking a break to grab some lunch
at one of the many restaurants at the resort. We spent our
days playing in the pool, playing in the sand, swimming,
reading, enjoying the swim-up pool bars, playing with the
kids, taking pictures, taking naps, etc.
Both Ainsley and Griffin were great about taking naps
wherever we were. If we were at the pool, Ainsley would
just get wrapped up in a towel and sleep on the lounge
chair, sometimes for 2 hours or more. Griffin would do the
same in his car seat. It was great. They would do this at
the pool, on the beach, or wherever! Ainsley loved
swimming and would push off the steps as if she was diving
over and over again, putting her hands out in front of her
and her face in the water. She would intentionally go
under water and open her eyes underwater. She really could
not get enough of the swimming pools. One night we even
took her to the pool after dinner to swim in the dark. The
lack of daylight didn't bother her at all. She was ready
to go play in the pool. She loved the ocean too (most of
the time), including playing in the sand. Griffin loved
splashing around in the pool and was content to have water
all over his face. He went underwater twice and came up
without any fuss. Griffin especially liked being in the
pool with Ainsley. And Ainsley felt the same way about
Griffin. Sometimes she would not go in the pool unless he
would come in too. She would whine and come over and try
to take Griffin off our laps. They are already becoming
great friends and playmates.
All in all our time was very relaxing. We did not get as
much rest or sleep as we used to on trips like this, but
it was great to be with the kids and to have someone
cooking and cleaning for us all week while we played in
the sun and sand and had a blast! We are already planning
our next trip somewhere around the world! Stay tuned… |

Clubb Family of Four: Turks & Caicos 2007
|
Our trip was certainly the highlight of this past month, but
there were many other milestones and highlights as well. There
are too many to mention all of them, but following are a few:
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
▪
First Date Night for David and
Shannon! We were finally comfortable enough to leave Ainsley
and Griffin with someone while we enjoyed a night out - the
first since Ainsley joined our family. Shannon's mom watched the
kids during one of her visits to Pittsburgh while David and
Shannon took the night to enjoy dinner and share a bottle of
wine that David had purchased for Shannon after Griffin was
born. We went to a cute little restaurant called Tomato Pie Café
just outside of North Park near our house in the suburbs of
Pittsburgh. It was a great night and we are looking forward to
many more dates together so we can keep our marriage a priority
which will in turn make us better parents.
▪
Griffin Cut His First Two Teeth!
It is hard to believe our baby already has teeth! Most
babies get their first teeth around seven months (on average)
and our boy got his first bottom two just after turning 4 months
old. We had one pretty cranky afternoon, but other than that, we
haven't experienced too many teething issues yet. We're now
waiting on the top four teeth to come through.
▪
Weight Check! Griffin and
Ainsley had their doctor checkups this past month and it is
always interesting to see how close they are in weight and
height considering Ainsley is 11 months older. On this occasion,
Ainsley weighed 19 lbs, 2 ounces and Griffin weighed only 4 ½
pounds less at 14 lbs, 8 ounces! They were also only 3 ½ inches
different in height. Little Ainsley is going to be a petite
little girl, coming in at 5% on the weight charts and 20% for
height. Griffin is going to soon become her “big” little brother
- 50% on the weight charts and 75% for height!
We're looking forward to things slowing down a bit in September
as we settle into autumn and move out of summer mode. We have
always enjoyed the beautiful seasons in Western Pennsylvania
with the fall foliage, pumpkins, and hikes in the park - and now
we're even more excited to share in these things with our
children (David just wishes they were already old enough to help
him rake the leaves!).
We'd love to hear from you and how your families are doing. Keep
us posted and let us know if you will be passing through the
great city of Pittsburgh any time soon or if you want to tag
along with us on our next adventure - tentatively a trip to
somewhere in Mexico in October, and tentatively a trip to
Barcelona, Spain in December (part business trip for David and
the other part family fun for everyone) - just let us know (we
would love a few babysitters - HA!). |
